Let me tell you a story.

I remember being in a Corporate meeting for one of the top 100 Companies in the U.S in 2008. The marketing department had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising tactics that were virtually impossible to measure for a Grand Opening of a new retail location. I asked, "How do we know if it is working?" No one could answer the question, yet money was flying out the door just the same. We also wanted to change our marketing programs quickly, on the dime, but the way we were marketing meant planning way in advance without the ability to make real-time strategy changes based on the results we were seeing.

Money was bleeding out of large marketing budgets into strategies that can not be measured, can not be targeted effectively and can not be guaranteed to work.

Shortly therafter, Upside was Founded in 2009. We knew that selling to the masses is not effective, especially for small business owners in New York, most of whom can not afford the large budgets required for traditional advertising programs such as TV and Print.

The problem was clear: Not being able to make marketing decisions on the fly; not having effective ways to track marketing tactics; and, not knowing if something was working was unnacceptable. Marketing like this created more questions than answers.

We also noticed that small businesses had other challenges. For example, they often did not have the in house expertise or programs in place that would work cohesively.  

So we built marketing services that work. Upside's programs help businesses not just attract leads, but build their brands and differentiate. Our marketing programs 1) work in coordination with one another. 2) are designed to attract the most profitable type of customers, and 3) can be measured and modified in realtime, in most cases, to enhance results.

Doug has 18 years of leadership experience working with Fortune 100 companies, small businesses and start-ups to identify, develop and manage growth oriented marketing programs. With expertise in web marketing, search engine optimization, search engine marketing and reputation management, Doug helps clients transform their online marketing programs into workhorse machines and shift dollars to the highest return on investment strategies.

Prior to founding Upside Business Consultants, Doug worked in executive roles at Fortune 500 companies including The Home Depot and TJX Companies leading strategic initiatives in the areas of business strategy, branding, internet marketing, website development, search engine optimization, email program development, merchandising, advertising, training, in-store marketing, community relations, and grand opening of new facilities.

Doug holds an MBA from the F.W. Olin School of Business at Babson College and undergraduate degrees in Economics and Anthropology from Tufts University. We strive to be your trusted consultant of choice. We go out of our way to make our billing as fair and clear as possible. We do not “pad” our fees or expenses. You will always know exactly what you are paying us for. Costs and terms are defined clearly as well as what deliverables will be provided for our fees.

What Does A Marketing Consultant Cost? How Do Your Determine Fees?

Our fees are very fair and competitive. When you factor in the savings you have from not needing to hire a permanent employee, the marketing expense tax savings and the return on investment you receive by working with an experienced consultant, marketing consultants can be of great value to your business.

Marketing consultants tend to have standard fees that can range based on skill level needed, technical proficiency and experience. Fees quoted on the internet tend to range from $100-$350 and up per hour. Upside's practice is to offer a practical, blended rate and discount rates to clients depending on scope. For example, if a project requires a combination of strategic and execution work, a blended rate may be charged that takes into account a lower rate for the execution portion of an engagement. That means our clients are paying a rate commensurate with the skill level required to complete tasks and not a penny more.

Many of our clients choose to work with us on a monthly retainer basis. A monthly fee is charged and in return an agreed upon number of hours and scope of services is provided. The more our clients work with us, the better rate and value they receive.

In addition, numerous projects may be quoted on a project-by-project basis to facilitate budgetting. Each client's situation dictates how proposals are made. We are proud to offer very flexible and transparent marketing fees for our clients. We are happy to discuss our rates with you when we speak. Training fees are flat fees and based on the number of staff getting trained at one time.
